5 Lisle Finish
The fabric is treated in a weak solution of sulphuric or hydrochloric acid and then dried before washing out the acid. The fabric is then placed in a machine that exposes it to the air and heated to about 100 deg. F. After a time the loose ends and fuzzy fibres become brittle and break off in the tumbling given to the fabric by the machine. When the proper finish is obtained the fabric is cooled and washed in an alkaline bath which stops the action of the dry acid and neutralises it. After thorough washing in water it is dried and the fabric is ready for dyeing. ———————— A finish given to yarns that are to be used for hosiery or underwear. See Lisle Thread. -
6 Beetling Machine
A machine employed to give the " Beetle Finish " to cloths by delivering a rapid succession of blows from a number of wooden hammers upon the cloth wound upon rollers or cylinders. Each hammer beats the fabric about 72 times a minute, and owing to the lateral movement of the cloth, each blow is at a different point on the cloth. The objects are to close up the threads, produce a bright hard finish and give the cloth a surface water-mark. Also see Imitation Beetle Finish under Calendering. -
7 Brush Finish
A machine, as illustrated, is used, which cleans the grey cloth and removes all loose leaf, etc. It gives a very slight nap to the fabric. The effect is to produce a soft woolly handle. The machine is provided with three serpentine brushes and four emery rollers, with a plaiting motion. The cloth is guided under and over as many rollers and brushes as are required to give the desired handle -
8 Imitation Beetle Finish
Fabrics are calendered by a machine fitted with pressed bowls only, no metal bowls are used. Such a calender may consist of five cotton and one bottom paper bowl. When carefully done the finish imparted to the cloth very nearly approaches a beetle finish.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Imitation Beetle Finish

9 Schreiner Finish
A special finish used largely in the finishing of black cotton sateens, Italians, etc. It is obtained by means of a machine similar to but heavier than a calender. A steel bowl is engraved with fine diagonal lines varying from about 150 to 350 per inch, depending upon the finish required. Two bowls are used, the top engraved steel and the bottom compressed cotton. Great pressure is applied to the bowls in order to emboss the fabric with the fine lines. As a rule the fabrics for Schreinering are mercerised beforehand. The lustre on the finished cloth is greatly enhanced by Schreinering. The best lustre is obtained when the engraved lines on the bowl run as nearly as possible parallel with the individual fibres in the yarn. The Schreiner effect is not permanent, it is removed by washing. -
10 Suede Finish
This is a finishing process to give a fabric the soft and smooth handle of chamois leather. It is produced by rubbing the fibres by means of rapidly revolving rollers covered with carborundum or some other material The fabric is passed in a stretched condition through the machine. -
